Whether you’re a newly qualified MOT Tester or returning to MOT Testing after the break, booking your DVSA MOT Demonstration Test is a crucial step in your journey to becoming an authorised MOT tester. The process ensures that you can competently assess vehicles to the required standards for MOT 
 
It’s also needed if you missed the missed the MOT annual training and assessment deadline; or if you’re already a class 4 & 7 MOT tester and are adding class 3 or 5.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to help you navigate the booking process smoothly.

  1. Ensure You Meet the Prerequisites for the DVSA MOT Demonstration Test. 

 Before booking your DVSA MOT demonstration test, confirm that you: 

  • Hold a Level 2 Award in MOT Testing. 
  • Possess a valid UK driving licence for the vehicle classes you’ll be MOT testing. 
  • Have at least four years of experience in servicing and repairing the vehicle types you intend to test. 
  • Are of ‘good repute’ with no unspent convictions for criminal offences. 
  1. Update Your MOT Testing Service Profile

If you’re a newly qualified MOT tester you must log into your MOT Testing Service account and update your profile with your Level 2 MOT testing certificate number before you try to book your MOT Demonstration Test.  

  1. Gather The Necessary Information and Documents

To book your test, you’ll need: 

  • Your MOT Testing Service user ID. 
  • The email address associated with your MOT Testing Service account. 
  • The name and ID number of the MOT centre or training centre where you wish to take your test. 
  • A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) consent check code.  If you haven’t got a DBS code, you can apply for one here basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, it normally takes about 14 days.  
  1. Book Your Demonstration Test

The easiest way to book your test is online through the official DVSA portal Complete the online form with the information you’ve gathered.

If you encounter any issues or can’t use the online service, you can contact DVSA customer services at 0300 123 9000 (choose option 2, then option 4) or email enquiries@dvsa.gov.uk. 

  1. If You Have Unspent Convictions or Lack a Consent Code

If your DBS check reveals unspent convictions, you can still proceed IF you believe that your unspent convictions don’t constitute as serious offence (you can check out the convictions and repute section of the MOT testing guide if you’re not sure).

In these circumstances, or if you don’t have a consent code because you have a basic disclosure certificate in Scotland, after submitting your online application, send all pages of your original DBS certificate, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and a covering letter (including your full name, MOT user ID, submission date, and the MOT testing group) to:

  1. Await DVSA Confirmation

After submitting your application, DVSA will contact you to arrange a test date, normally within 10 working days but it can take up to 4 weeks. If you haven’t received a response after 4 weeks, get in touch with DVSA for an update. 

  1. Prepare for the Demonstration Test

On the day of your test, ensure you take: 

  1. A vehicle that’s at least 3 years old and matches the class you’ll be MOT testing. 
  2. Your UK driving licence (and additional photo ID, such as a passport, if you don’t have a photocard licence). 
  3. Your level 2 MOT testing award certificate.

During the test, a DVSA examiner will ask you to: 

  • Conduct a demonstration MOT test. 
  • Record the results in a practice version of the MOT Testing Service. 
  • Answer up to 5 open-book questions related to MOT testing procedures and standards. 
  1. After the Test

If you pass, you’ll be authorised to perform MOT tests at the MOT testing stations where you’re registered. If you don’t pass, the examiner will provide feedback and explain what you need to do next.
